The Indiana TRIO Board of Directors have established Professional Awards to be presented at the Annual Professional Conference.

Winners will be recognized at the conference

LAVERTA L. TERRY

 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD

The LaVerta L. Terry Outstanding Service Award is designed to recognize the contributions of a professional in a TRIO program. Nominees should exhibit those qualities of loyalty to the needs of TRIO students and to the programs which serve them ABOVE and BEYOND the levels expected from a mere career choice. The recipient should serve as a MODEL to others who work alongside them and as a standard by which all can measure their own effectiveness.


LaVerta L. Terry was active in shaping Groups from its infancy. Before Terry served as assistant director for the Groups Program, she helped Rozelle Boyd, founder and first Groups Program director, design the initiative. In 1970, Terry accepted the position of assistant director, which she served as until 1983 when she was promoted to director. She led the program until 1996. LaVerta L. Terry dedicated more than a quarter of a century to making Indiana University more accessible to students of all backgrounds.

BERTHA M. JONES

MEMORIAL AWARD

The Bertha M. Jones Memorial Award is given to an alumnus of a TRIO program. The recipient of the Bertha M. Jones Memorial Award will have achieved SIGNIFICANT SUCCESS in their lives; the award is intended to allow Indiana TRIO to celebrate the success of former TRIO students who, without their participation in a TRIO program, might not have had the chance to NOTABLY SUCCEED.


Bertha Jones was a former Talent Search Director with the Gary, IN school district. She served as a guidance counselor before she took the Director's position. At the time the Gary program and the former program at ALFE (Association for a Loan Free Education) in Indianapolis were two of the original Talent Search programs in the state.


Award Criteria:

*TRIO Alumni who have achieved significant success in their lives

*Notable success is attributed to past participation in a TRIO program

ROZELLE BOYD

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Rozelle Boyd Outstanding Achievement Award is awarded to an accomplished professional from outside of the TRIO profession. The recipient must demonstrate a strong sense of inclusiveness and personal attributes such as loyalty, empathy, and compassion. In addition, the individual is deeply committed to the call to action and demonstrates strong support of underrepresented individuals in higher education.


Rozelle Boyd served as assistant dean for University Division at Indiana University, Bloomington from 1968 to 1976. He added to his responsibility as founder-director to what is now called the Groups Scholars Program, which addresses low attendance rates among first-generation, low-income, and physically challenged students. This program still exists today and helps approximately 300 students each year adjust to college life.


Award Criteria:

*Accomplished professional from outside the TRIO profession

*Strong sense of inclusiveness

*Personal attributes of loyalty, empathy, and compassion

*Deeply committed to a call to action

*Strong support of underrepresented individuals in higher education
